Grow Gently
Jenny Smith | MAY 1
“Growth is not a straight line.” Unknown
May carries the feeling of expansion. Light lingers a little longer, energy begins to build, and signs of growth appear all around us. At the same time, growth can bring a subtle kind of pressure. A pull to do more, to be more, or to move faster.
Yoga offers a different perspective.
Growth, in this space, is not about constant upward momentum. It is about steady, sustainable development that honors where you are right now. It unfolds through presence, patience, and a deep connection to what truly supports you.
On the mat, growth may look like exploring strength and stability without rushing toward intensity. Off the mat, it can show up as trusting your timing, staying open to learning, and allowing yourself to evolve without comparison.
Sometimes growth is obvious. Other times, it’s quiet and almost imperceptible. Both are valid. Both matter.
Take a moment to notice where you are already growing, even if it feels subtle. Let that be enough.
Expanding with Intention
“Your direction is more important than your speed.” – Richard L. Evans
Growth feels most supportive when it is intentional. Without intention, expansion can feel overwhelming, scattered, or depleting. With intention, it becomes focused, meaningful, and energizing.
In your practice, this might look like exploring new sensations, holding postures a little longer, or building strength while staying connected to your breath and awareness. The difference is not what you are doing, but how you are doing it.
Off the mat, intentional growth often means choosing where your energy goes. Not every opportunity requires a yes. Not every path needs to be pursued.
Instead of stretching yourself thin, consider what truly matters right now. Let your growth be guided by clarity rather than urgency.
Strength with Softness
"Yoga invites us to dance between the rise & fall, the striving & surrendering, the strong & the soft." - Jana Kingsford
Yoga teaches that strength and softness are not opposites. They exist together, each one supporting the other. This balance is reflected in the concept of sthira sukha, where steadiness and ease meet.
When effort and ease are in harmony, both the body and the mind feel more supported.
On the mat, this may feel like grounding into stability while allowing breath and sensation to move freely. Building strength without gripping. Softening without collapsing.
Off the mat, this balance shows up when you remain steady through challenges without becoming rigid. Strength becomes more sustainable when it’s paired with compassion.
Notice where you might be holding too tightly. See what happens when you soften just enough to create space, while still maintaining support.
Patience and Presence
“Wherever you are, be there totally.” – Eckhart Tolle
Growth often unfolds more slowly than we expect. It does not always follow a clear or linear path. This is where patience becomes essential.
When you focus only on outcomes, it’s easy to miss what is happening right now. Growth rooted in presence feels steady and sustainable. It allows you to stay connected to the process rather than constantly reaching for results.
In your practice, progress is not always visible. Strength builds beneath the surface. Awareness deepens quietly. Even when it feels like nothing is changing, something is.
On the mat, patience may look like staying with a sensation rather than immediately trying to move away from it. Off the mat, it might feel like allowing things to unfold in their own time, without comparison or pressure.
Presence creates space for growth to feel grounded instead of forced.
Growth does not need to be rushed or proven. It does not need to look a certain way. It can be steady, quiet, and gentle.
Let yourself grow in a way that feels supportive, sustainable, and true.
