What are the main benefits of yoga and how often do I need to practice to experience them?

The good news is, yoga offers a whole lot more than just flexibility (though you’ll probably notice that too!). Regular yoga practice can help improve strength, balance, and posture; reduce stress and support relaxation; increase lung capacity and breathing awareness; boost immunity; enhance mental clarity and focus; and help you feel more at home in your body and at peace in your life.

So how often should you practice to see these benefits? Here’s my honest answer - any amount of yoga is better than none at all! Even just ten minutes once a week can make a difference.

That said, if you’re looking to see more noticeable or longer-lasting results, consistency is key. I usually recommend starting with one class per week and building from there, working your way up to two or three times a week (or more) if that feels doable. That doesn’t have to mean going to an hour-long, in-person class every time. There are so many great online options that make it easier to practice on your own schedule. One teacher I often recommend is Yoga with Adriene. Her YouTube channel is full of free classes of all lengths, styles, and levels.

In May, I shared a breakdown of some of the most popular styles of yoga, from deeply restful restorative practices to high-energy power flows. The “best” kind of yoga for you depends on your individual goals, needs, and lifestyle. Some days you might crave a quiet, grounding class. Other days, you might want to move and sweat a little more. The beauty of yoga is that there’s something for every mood, every body, and every season of life.

Wherever you are on your yoga journey, remember that it’s not about being perfect, it’s about showing up consistently and being present on and off your mat. Find a rhythm that works for you, and let your practice meet you where you are. The benefits will follow.
